Week 48- The Holy Ghost and Jesus Christ

Hello Dearest, and most Wonderful Family and Friends!
Wow, what a week. Full of miracles and very busy but wonderful missionary work. Today we had a super fun pday! We went to a mountain and it has wonderful views of the ocean. I loved it. Got a super good work out too. ^^ oh and I ate sea snail today. it was kind of really gross and squirty. I didn’t like it.
The view.

I got to visit the beautiful land of Miryang for my investigator’s, now member!, confirmation. This confirmation is the blessing of the Holy Ghost. I wanted to tell about the miracle of her conversion. She is 20 years old and lives alone. Her parents have passed away but has an uncle that sort of takes care of her when she needs it. So, from the beginning of when we started meeting her she had a lot of opposition from her uncle. He didn’t want her meeting with us but she finally got permission to meet with us when I got there. He had been given a Word of Wisdom pamphlet by another pair of missionaries where he lives and he decided that if our church had that kind of thing then it was a good church. He smokes and drinks waaaay too much and our investigator didn’t like it one bit.

this is from my trainee Sister Kim Da Jin. she said “here are the baptism pictures. I am grateful that you were able to come the other day for our investigators confirmation.”

We met every single week, she wasn’t progressing super well because her uncle didn’t want her to read the book of mormon. then the next week she was allowed to start reading because she decided that she wanted to. She prayed a little and read a little of the book of mormon. we thought she was never going to progress because she would never come to church and didn’t want to get baptized. She was very firm that she didn’t want to. Then when Sister Kim Da Jin and I started working with her together we met 2-3 times a week. We had less investigators and more time to meet with her that many times. She was progressing little by little. She started reading and praying on her own. She believed everything that we taught her. She said that she had been praying for her uncle’s heart to change. He was smoking and drinking and spending less time with his family. This is where we started to see the miracles happening. She would tell us the changes of what her uncle would go through. He started drinking and smoking less, and spending more time with his family. Then my last week in miryang, he allowed her to go to church and he actually wanted to start meeting with us to learn about the church. She also was doing missionary work with her uncle and talked about the book of mormon with him. His heart was softening.
She finally came to church my last weekend and she is finally baptized now. She was has been given permission to do what she likes. He still hasn’t been able to meet with the missionaries but he still wants to. This was a HUGE miracle because he super did not like our church and wanted her to do nothing with it and now he has allowed her to be baptized. She also herself wanted to get baptized. It was amazing and I am grateful for the Lord in helping with this huge miracle. We have prayed, studied, and worried about her for so long. I am grateful that now she has been completely changed. She is soooo good and so tender-hearted. I am grateful that I was able to contribute to a part of her conversion.
i was found in seoul by a sister that i met in the mtc. so funny.

I wanted to share the visiting teaching message in this months Liahona. I loved it and shared it with a member that we were visiting. Here it is:

The Attributes of Jesus Christ: Obedient Son

Following Jesus Christ’s example of obedience increases our faith in Him. “Is it any wonder,” said Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, “that Christ chooses first and foremost to define himself in relation to his father—that he loved him and obeyed him and submitted to him like the loyal son he was? … Obedience is the first law of heaven.”1

The scriptures teach “when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated” (D&C 130:21). Our spiritual growth takes place as we draw close to God through obedience and invite the power of the Savior’s Atonement into our lives.

“As we walk in obedience to the principles and commandments of the gospel of Jesus Christ,” said Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, “we enjoy a continual flow of blessings promised by God in His covenant with us. Those blessings provide the resources we need to act rather than simply be acted upon as we go through life. … Obedience gives us greater control over our lives, greater capacity to come and go, to work and create.” 2

“Can the spiritual strength that results from consistent obedience to the commandments be given to another person?” asked Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. “The clear answer … is no.”3

The parable of the ten virgins is an example of this principle. While all of the virgins took their lamps to “meet the bridegroom,” only five were wise and took oil in their lamps. The other five were foolish because they “took no oil with them.”

Then the cry came at midnight: “Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.” All the virgins trimmed their lamps, but the foolish virgins had no oil. They said to the wise virgins, “Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.”

The wise virgins answered, “Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go … and buy for yourselves.” And while the foolish virgins were gone, the bridegroom came and the wise virgins went with him and “the door was shut”

And I also wanted to share this scripture attached to the article. D&C 93:28  “He that keepeth his commandments receiveth truth and light, until he is glorified in truth and knoweth all things.”

What I love about this article is that through obedience we are able to receive truth, light, and knowledge. It is amazing that obedience opens our eyes to bigger and better things. We were visiting with a less active this week. She said some very sad things. She doesn’t see the reason why she needs to go to church. She said that because we are missionaries we have a different opinion and outlook. She also basically said to us is that we don’t understand from her point of view. She admitted that she was lazy and didn’t have a desire to go to church. She said because we are missionaries, our vision is skewed and we can’t see everything. I was sad because I realized that yes, we are missionaries but as missionaries our minds and hearts are a lot more sensitive to the things that go around us. We understand more because we are constantly having the spirit with us. I am sad for her because our minds our open and she has closed her mind and heart from hearing the holy ghost. I know that obedience to the gospel makes us more knowledgeable and opens our minds to view things the way God sees things. I am grateful for his constant guidance and love.

I love missionary work and I love being a member of this gospel. I know it is true with all of my heart. I know it is the only thing that will be true and everlasting happiness.

I LOVE YOU ALL!!!!

Love, Sister Orme

Week 25- Haunted scrolls

Hello Dearest Family and Friends-
Wow, what a week. We were so busy! Mostly because we are planning a fantastic Mini MTC program that will start tomorrow and end thursday. It will be 3 days of teaching the members in our branch how to share the gospel. I am so excited and we are so happy to help this area grow. We know it will be a blessing. Unfortuneately our Korean Elder, Elder Moon, has transfered to a new area so we are hoping he will be able to come back for the second because we really need him! Our new Elder is Elder Hansen, He is our District leader and just switched with Elder Moon. We are excited to see how he can help push Miryang forward now that Elder Moon has helped so much. He was here for 4 transfers! So long. Sister Johnson and I are staying together! ^^ I will tell you more about it next week. 🙂
Cutest puppy ever! So gentle, so quiet and sooooooo cute!

This week I had some more fun eating adventures… I had jellyfish (soooo interesting, not sure how to describe the texture), raw beef (which tastes just the same when it is cooked, i guess that is good. ^^ people eat raw beef ALOT here), also raw fish again (as usual), then raw eel with the spine still in it (hard to describe the texture as well, it was interesting). Yes, I had all of this in one week and only 2 days out of the week. So, interesting. I literally can eat anything now!!! We also had this super terrible, bitter root drink that the Elder’s investigator gave us. They said it was good for our health. Sister Johnson said it is probably the worst thing she has ever had, she said she would rather have dog meat again rather then drink that again. She couldn’t finish it. It seriously was terrible, I just chugged it down! ^^  Ooh I love food adventures. I can eat anything now. Well, maybe.
Here is a picture of Gramps. So cute!

So, last monday we went to a buddhist store. So cool! Sister Johnson and I bought these really cool scroll things. Then we were looking at the front of them after we bought them, later that night, then we realized there were some words we didn’t understand on the front. We looked them up and they were super bizarre and kind of strange words. We called Elder Moon about them and he asked me how I knew those words. He asked me where I got them and I told him they were from the scrolls. Come to find out they were excorcist scrolls. What?!?! We were so shocked! We had no clue. They were soooo cool looking. He said one of the scrolls was an excorcist scroll, the other a calling of spirits scroll, and he didn’t talk about the other one. He told us to throw away the scrolls we had. We did the next day. So scary! We put them in a different room so they were not in the same room while we were sleeping. I am glad we had a Korean. I was wanting to get some for Creed because he loves that kind of stuff too, but I will get him something else. It is hilarious. 2 innocent Americans getting satanic scrolls. who knew? I am grateful that we have extra protection from the Lord. Phew! ^^

We met with Gramps (kim Jay Shik) this week. He is soooo cute. He is the 80 year old man we met. We gave him a Book of Mormon in English as well. He wants to meet again because we were only able to meet for 30 minutes because he had a random meeting to go to. We are also refferring him to the Elders in his area but he loves us so we will still see him occasionally. He has a great desire to learn. I love it!
This week’s weather has been crazy but good. We had typhoons again. The weather was perfect weather. Ahh the best! Then a TON of rain and them super heat. It is crazy this week.
I was reading the Priesthood Session talk by President Monson, the Be Strong and of a Good Courage talk. Wow, it is sooooooooooooo good. I was going to write the highlights but I forgot the talk at home, next week. It was so amazing. I LOVE THAT TALK. It is so important to remember that the Lord is always with you but to also stand up for what is right. Now, that it comes closer to the second coming and the hastening of the work, we must stand for what is right. Despite losing friends, family, job, etc. Those are all temporary things but yes they are hard things to lose as well. As we stand for what is right and what we believe we will forever be blessed now and for the eternities. It is now game time and we must prepared for whatever storms come. I love being able to say that we are missionaries and that we are here to serve the Lord. Time is so precious and this life so important. We must make the most of it and do everything we can to be on the side of the Lord. Did you all see the new Mormon message??? Wow, powerful. The Lord wants you on HIS SIDE TODAY! As we strive to be on the Lord’s side we will see the fruits of our labors. I promise you all that you will be blessed and taken care of. I know it will happen. Maybe not in the ways you think but it will come. Today is the day to choose who’s side you are on. There is no middle ground and you can’t choose both. I choose the Lord’s side. The other side is a dangerous side which will only lead to pain, sorrow, and loss of blessings. Which one would you rather choose. Definitely the Lord’s side.
Keep working hard and be the best people possible that you can be. I love you all! I appreciate everything that you are doing to be the best member, mother, father, missionary, friend, etc. You can do it! Remember the Lord will always remember you if you remember him.
I LOVE YOU ALL SO MUCH!!!!!

Week 22- Gramps

Hello Beloved Family and Friends-

Well, this week I hit my 7th month mark! Waahh! Soooo crazy. I cannot believe it at all.
I forgot to tell you another weird thing I have eaten. It is not too bad but wouldn’t mind not eating it again. Like most of my other eating adventures. ^^  I ate two whole crabs. They were cooked but still. Interesting… We were at a members house and I was trying to figure out how you eat them. Usually it is best to watch and observe the koreans on how they eat food. Our member just took one and ate the whole thing! I was sooo shocked. Pinchers and all. So, I decided to try it. Then I ate another one to make her happy. It was so fun, crunchy and interesting.
It is getting really hot and humid now. We are slowly becoming accustomed to just being sweaty all the time. It is so nasty but it is all in the work of the Lord! ^^ There really is nothing we can do about it, so we just get used to it.
This week we met an amazing 80 year old man! We wish he could be our investigator but he is male and lives in a different area. Soooooo sad. We were getting off the bus when we met him. He speaks perfect English. We started talking and he asked us who we were and then he was like “Well, can we sit down and talk about your church?” Sister Johnson and I were dumbfounded. We said yes. We sat down for about an hour. We taught him the whole Restoration and a few other things about the gospel. We bore our testimonies to him. He was so interested. He was so amazed that Joseph Smith got an answer. We gave him a Book of Mormon. He has such a thirst for knowledge even though he is really old. He wants to meet again and talk about the BofM. We are sooooo excited to meet him and talk more about the gospel. We are meeting him with the Elders and then after we will give his info to the Elders in his area. He is sooo amazing. We teach him tomorrow and we want to give him a baptismal date. He is so ready and so willing to listen and accept everything. He was so cute and kept telling how pure we looked and how we emanated goodness. I will keep you updated on what happens to him. We call him Gramps but not to his face. We just think he is so cute and we totally seems like a gramps. He is so sweet and kind.  He listens and has many good and important questions. So ready!
We eat Patbingsoo (팥빙수) at this grandma’s house. The best patbingsoo ever and the cheapest. She also gives us free dokbulgi (떡볶이) i am not sure how to romanize it. But it is this rice cake thingys with fish cakes as well. Sooooo good. She gives it to us for free and basically unlimited. Sooo cute!

It was interesting because I always know when we will have a miracle. For some reason that morning I was really frustrated at NOTHING. But I kept feeling these really dark feeling and everything was soo annoying. I was wondering to myself why I was so frustrated. I rarely ever get frustrated but I was that morning. Then I was like well, I am a missionary and missionaries are happy regardless of what side of the bed I wake up on. So, I threw out all of those bad feelings and prayed to Heavenly Father that I would be happy. Instantly, I knew why I was having that attitude. Everytime Satan tries to make us unprepared for what will happen. I have realized this several times on my mission. Everytime that I have a bad feeling and it is for no reason, it is Satan trying to work on me so I don’t see the miracle that will happen. That is what made me happy that day because I knew there was going to be a miracle that day. After I changed my attitude Heavenly Father blesses you with being prepared for anything. And we were! Another miracle is that we were trying to get on a certain bus but we accidentally went to the wrong stop, so we took a different bus instead. The thing is we were meant to go to the wrong bus stop and take that bus because Gramps was on that bus. Heavenly Father put the 3 of us together to meet. He is soooo good and knows all. I know we had all of those experiences in the morning to be ready for him and to find him. The Lord always prepares us. I am grateful for how Heavenly Father teaches us and shows us the way to those who are ready and willing. He is the best!
I want to have everyone know that the Gospel is the most amazing thing in the world. It is blessing so many and I am so grateful for this opportunity to share it. I will always cherish these moments forever. I want to challenge everyone to think and pray for certain people to be put in your way to bless with the gospel. I am not asking you to proselyte or knock on doors. I am asking and imploring you to search within your friends to bless them. I know that whatever their response to the gospel is, you succeeded in sharing it. Look for the potential of righteousness in others even when you think they have none. EVERYONE NEEDS THE GOSPEL. It will bless you as well. Sharing the gospel is helping another child of God to come closer to him and to learn of him.
I love this gospel and I love missionary work. I could not imagine myself anywhere else. I LOVE YOU ALL!
The work is hastening and we are all apart of it. I am praying for you all and I know that as you try your hardest to share the gospel you will see miracles and blessings in your life.
Love you!

P.S. I will send more pics next week!

Week 21- Pictures!

Hello Dearest Friends and Family-
News to the mainland! We have survived the really intense and powerful typhoon. We had a raging typhoon hit our area. We were so worried about what we would do for missionary work. The sprinkles/hot sun were waaaay too much for us. But seriously, we had warnings of a typhoon and a lot of stores were closed. Apparently the typhoon suddenly changed direction and didn’t hit Korea. It did rain a lot this week though. It is monsoon season right now so it rains a lot! But so far we haven’t had any flooding yet, which is nice. It so humid and hot though. It has been this way for the last few weeks since I have been here. We basically sweat all day and we are sticky. Kind of gross but we just kind of deal with it.
Chicken Feet! Yum!

Well, I can seriously eat ANYTHING now. This week was not super adventurous but we ate raw fish. It was cut very fine and was super long and stringy. Then we had a soup with a whole fish cooked in it. Eye balls and all. It wasn’t bad.
We went on a branch picnic last, last Saturday. It was soooo fun!

It was a really good week! We got 3 new investigators this week! We are doing the 30/30 program with them. 30 minutes English and 30 minutes Gospel. Sister Johnson, on our second visit with the 3 of them, decided to ask if they had any questions for us. One of them asked why there were so many churches and why were there so many different beliefs…..ohh. Such a good question that we can TOTALLY answer. So we went into the first lesson. The spirit guided us so well, it was seriously all the Lord. We talked about how when Christ came to this earth he established his gospel. We compared this to a puzzle. There are all of these different things that make up the gospel but when Christ left and his apostles were killed people took parts of his gospel but didn’t have everything. there is something missing in each church. Then we went into the Joseph Smith story. It was sooooo powerful. So good. It was intense and you could feel the spirit so strongly. We then bore our testimonies and then they all had to leave because they needed to go pick up kids and make dinner. Seriously, such a good lesson!
We made rootbeer and I was wearing a ridiculously awesome outfit. Grandma pants and grandma shirt combined. Wooh. Lookin good. haha.

This week I read 3 Nephi 19:25. So good. Continues with my Christ’s light study. Here is the scripture: “And it came to pass that Jesus blessed them as they did pray unto him; and his countenance did smile upon them, and the light of his countenance did shine upon them and behold they were as white as the countenance and also the garments of Jesus; and behold the whiteness thereof did exceed all the whiteness, yea, even there could be nothing upon earth so white as the whiteness thereof.” Wow, if we could shine a light that bright, in reality people would actually be blinded, but if we could shine the light of Christ that bright people will be drawn to us. People who have even the smallest amount, which is everyone, then they can be drawn to. It is amazing the influence Christ had on people. Even though Christ is not on the earth now, we can definitely be representatives of him and put his light into our own hearts. After we put the light in our hearts we can share. Sister Gilbert always talked about giving out and sharing that light within you. Don’t be scared to shine or show it or give it! We are given the responsibility to do so. “How great is this work” !!! It is the best. I know I say it every week but I want everyone to know, that I LOVE MISSIONARY WORK! It is the most fulfilling thing ever. You don’t even have to serve a full time mission to do missionary work. There are so many different ways you can do it. Find those ways and do! The gospel is about doing! There is no such thing as idleness in the gospel. The work is hastening and we are here to help that work move forward. Go out and do!
I LOVE YOU ALL SOOOOO MUCH!

I LOVE BEING A MISSIONARY!!!! Week 7<–WHAT???

I seriously LOVE being a missionary. It can be soo hard but it is so rewarding at the same time. I have come to realize that we must not focus on everything at once, that is where you get too overwhelmed. I have learned to look at things little by little. Sometimes you want to baptize the whole world but you can only do that as you save one soul at a time. That is how Jesus Christ works. He saves a soul one by one. Yesterday was a momentous occasion for 울산 (Ulsan). We had TWO fantastic people take steps into the waters of baptism. One was our investigator 오지윤 (Ohjeeyoon) and the Elders investigator 백송민 (Peksongmeen) He is 17 or 18! Wow, the craziest but most amazing day of our life! The spirit was bursting at this baptism. I am soooooo happy! I still can’t believe it either. I can’t believe that they are baptized. It is amazing! I am sending pictures! This week was definietly crazy but it all worked out! Heavenly Father has been blessing us sooooooooooooooooo much!!!

So, I am answering mom’s questions and I thought everyone would want to know.
Korea is a very beautiful place but can also be dirty. Which is fine. I LOVE KOREA! the streets, the shops and places remind me of russia. Old grandmas sell food on the streets and there are a lot of street markets.

Everytime we pass koreans they always say: SOOO BEAUTIFUL! hahah in korean of course. it is hilarious and we love it. I am going to miss it so much when I leave korea. I am going to miss the grandmas calling us beautiful and the korean people freaking out when they see us all the time. haha.
There are a not a lot of foreigners here but when there are we try to avoid them. hahaha. for some reason they weird us out. most of time we have had really bad feelings when we are with them so we try to avoid them because they are always scary….well not all the time but sometimes we wouldn’t have feelings around them. but we say hi to them and that is that, they are not super interested in us. one time a girl and a guy came up to us and we talked to them for two seconds. the boy seemed interested in what we were talking about but once the girl found out we were missionaries she said bye. haha.
Me and my group that left from the MTC. We met at training meeting.
DSCF1487
koreans like hello kitty and cute things. i love it! hahah sometimes you will see men wearing and using really girly things but it is completely normal here. i love it! hahah
i have not felt anyones enmity to japan or of any place. the young koreans actually really like the japanese style. a lot of chinese and japanese people come here.
Jordan is doing great! he and his mom didn’t progress super well this week but we will bring them back on track.
We walk, ride buses or take the occasional taxi to go places. I love it!!! you get to see the city and you get to meet people. i am so grateful we don’t ride bikes or have a car so we can be able to contact people.

I cannot stay away from the night shades because in every single meal basically the only thing that doesn’t have it, is a seaweed salad, the rice or sometimes they have cabbage sald. Heavenly Father has been blessing me with staying healthy from it. When we are at home we eat very well and keep away from it. It is very rude to not eat the food they give you so I eat it. I have been totally fine! ^^ I get tired but we are so busy that only by the end of the day does it really help me. I pray all the time to the Lord about it. I am praying for Creed too. Pray for it creed!
Yes, the competition is really bad. Kids stay in school all day and waaaay late into the night. sometimes they dn’t get home until 11:30 or 12 at night. apparantly the suicide rate is really high here becuase there is so much competition. i hope it gets better. It is because korea is soooo small but so many people live here. We are normally feeding ourselves. But sometimes we will have a 식사 (Shiksa-Food appointment) with members. It is always awesome! We have been fed a lot which is actually surprising cause normally they don’t feed you as much. But they always feed us tons of food and it is hard becuase you want to please them so you have to eat a ton. we basically don’t eat at all besides at that time. I am happy they are not too frequent.
I am soooooo happy for Brian! Please tell him that I am so happy for him. I know his life is going to be very blessed as he pursues the gospel. There is nothing that is better or more perfect. Heavenly Father loves him and I love him too. We are so blessed to have him in our lives. I am so happy that he is taking these steps. These are the most important but I know as he does so his life will be 10 times better. It will bless his life forever. You are the best St. Brian!!!!!!
I am sooo excited for JONNY!!!! Congratulations on your mission call!!! That is awesome!! I will write you! ^^
Look who I found? this is going to be on a members fridge. Cousin Jonny!
DSCF1497
It is completely safe to send stuff! No problems like Creed. Sorry Creed!
Ok, so everyone is asking about my birthday. It was really great!!! So far we have been fed 3 cakes. Hahaha and people keep wanting to do things for me. It kind of felt like any other day but it was still fun! Mom, thank you for the necklace and the bracelet!!! I love them both. I have been wearing them to! Love you!! So all in all it was great!
I love love love missionary work. It is seriously the most greatest thing ever!!! Wow, i love it a lot. I am so happy and I am doing super well. It has not been hard at all for me to adjust to missionary life. Heavenly Father is really blessing me and my companion. We feel his love and blessings everyday. It is all about obedience, reading your scriptures, praying, going to church, and keeping the commandments. Through those things Heavenly Father blesses us immenseley.
LOVE YOU ALLLLL!!!!!

Hello From Korea

Hello Everyone!!

I just got to say I love Korea! It is seriously the greatest thing! I am so happy to be here. I am sorry but I don’t have much time to write. Today was super busy. I am actually allowed to email for 2 hours! But we couldn’t today.

So, our first week has been amazing! We are SOOOOO BUSY! We have so many investigators which is awesome. We are also planning on having 6 baptisms this transfer! I will let you know how it goes. Next week I promise I will write more about exactly what I did for these past few days.

I am in Ulsan right now (울산) and my trainer is Sister Benbrook. We are both working hard and loving it here. I am so happy to be a missionary. It is the greatest!

Ulsan, S Korea
I am sooo sorry but I really have to go. I took too much time reading all of the emails and I have to email my branch president.

I will just say this…. Sister Benbrook and I are making things happen and we are working hard. I love missionary work and could not imagine myself anywhere else. I am so happy. I love the people already. Everyone tells me I am so beautiful and that I speak amazing Korean (even when I say hello hahahah). I am so happy that we had so much practice with our Korean in the MTC. It has really helped with everything. A lot of people are speaking to us, and you were all right, because of my hair and because we are both Americans. It opens doors. Heavenly Father has also blessed us with being able to contact many people and to have sooooooo many investigators. We have no time for anything but them.

Today we had a ton of fun! We went with an investigator to a beautiful beach and ate delicious food. It is sooo healthy here. I love it! It makes me feel soooo good! We also had many adventures today. Next week I will be better and write everything that has happened. I have to go. LOVE YOU ALL!!!
